Build A Continuous Arm Windsor Chair with Mike Herrel Friday, Saturday, & Sunday, July 18, 19 &20 9am - 5pm Tuition: $750 - materials included Class Size: 6
Woodworkers have always been fascinated with chairmaking, but few go on to actually build one. This three-day Windsor chair class with master chairmaker Micheal Herrell takes the stress and mystery out of this fun and creative craft. The making of a traditional Windsor chair brings back the craftmanship of Colonial America by building chairs using 250 year old construction techniques. Students will build their own continuous arm chair. The history of chairmaking will be covered along with the benefits of green wood construction. You will be taught the use of an adz, inshave and spokeshave, and use these tools to carve your seat and spindles. Steam bending will be discussed for the construction of the chairs' arms and bow (the bent parts will be provided). All the turnings will be provided, already turned but still green. You will learn the drying techniques and then assemble all the parts. Jigs and fixtures will be used to aid in the drilling and construction. At the end of the class, finishing will be discussed. By eliminating the tedious back-breaking steps, we go directly to the allure of chairmaking. This in turn, creates success and produces a comfortable, strong and beautiful Windsor chair. The class teaches all the steps neccessary to return home and produce additional chairs.. |
